Calves in the mud room by Jerome Brown

 2013

Wade Summers has a hot date for the school dance and he can hardly believe his luck. The girl who has it all is going to the dance with him, a rancher’s grandson. Wade arranges transportation and buys her a corsage, but things start going wrong the minutes he leaves home. Not one, but two different pregnant heifers need help delivering their calves. By the time he goes back inside to clean up, he arrives at the dance late and finds his date has moved on. It gives him the opportunity to re-evaluate his priorities and get to know a fellow student who is the polar opposite of the girl he thought he wanted. A brilliant and bittersweet coming of age novella.
